Latvian National Museum of Art: cupola staircase. The following photographs explore the sequence of space in the Latvian National Museum of Art from the second floor cupola to the top floor under the attic. The contemporary aspect of this intervention is remarkable given the Neoclassical typology and architectural style of the existing museum.
ProcessOffice was able to integrate a new circulation that demarcates itself from the historical building, while providing a balance with the existing architecture. The abstract whiteness, construction, and detailing of the new staircase—similar to the one they designed at the Castellan’s house in Vilnius, Lithuania (completed 2024)—is, at least for me, a lesson in how a contemporary intervention can have a successful dialogue with the ‘old’.
